The Yamaha YZF-R1 bike, launched in 1998, revolutionized the sportbike landscape by successfully combining the awesome power available previously in the true liter class (1,000cc) with the lightweight and responsiveness that a 600-class chassis affords.

Over the years, despite maintaining its distinctive sharp look, the R1 has undergone technical upgradations to keep pace with the times. The 2006 edition features a short-stroke 998cc DOHC, 20-valve, liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine that produces a peak power of 175 bhp.

The dual-valve fuel injection system uses motor-driven secondary throttle valves and 32-bit ECU for responsive, instantaneous power delivery. The refurbished Deltabox V frame, revised forks and a 20mm longer swingarm facilitate superb handling in the R1.

In 2006, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yamaha racing in America, Yamaha released a Limited Edition yellow/white/black YZF-R1 in original Yamaha racing colours.

The Gallardo may have lived in the shadow of its big brother, the Murcielago, but the latest model could well be the most significant car Lamborghini has ever built. Andy Enright reports

It takes quite some time to get your head around a Lamborghini Gallardo. After all, Lambos were always supposed to be cars that would leave the average driver with post traumatic stress disorder after the briefest acquaintance. Yet the latest Gallardo doesnt quite fit that billing. The doors dont open skywards, instead functioning much like a normal car.

Yes, its low but visibility isnt too bad, theres air conditioning, a decent stereo and the controls dont seem to require superhuman effort to function. Shouldnt it be a little more special? Try accelerating beyond 4,000rpm. Then it becomes a very different animal altogether.

European drive-by noise regulations have meant that Lamborghini have been forced to baffle the Gallardos exhaust at low revs, making it civilised around town. Give the accelerator a good prod, however, and the difference is astonishing. I had the opportunity to drive the Gallardo back to back with the 6.5-litre Murcielago and the smaller car is a good deal more vocal when driven in anger, the five-litre V10 making itself heard from half a mile distant, its strident bark ricocheting off the sides of the Tuscan valley.

All was well again. Lamborghini are still building cars that could earn you an ASBO in double quick time. The changes to the latest Gallardo are wide reaching, despite the fact that it doesnt look all that different. Still, it didnt need to.

With Ferraris svelte 360 Modena evolving into the rather lumpen F430, the Gallardo didnt need to do much at all on the styling front to stay ahead of the car from Maranello and its also a good deal more arresting than the comparatively mundane-looking Porsche 911 Turbo. Only Fords GT offers a similar visual right hook in this sector of the market. Where the original Gallardo enjoyed a serious power advantage over the 360 Modena, the arrival of the F430 saw the car from SantAgata lose out in terms of power to weight ratio. The latest car sees its power hiked from 493bhp to a hefty 512bhp with torque remaining static at 376lb/ft.

This now gives the Gallardo a real sledgehammer punch at the top end, peak power streaming in at a stratospheric 7,800rpm, and restores the power to weight advantage in its favour. Aside from that, the brakes are bigger, the software for the optional e-gear paddle shift gearbox has been finessed and the all-wheel drive chassis has been sharpened still further.

The paddle shift is now one of the best of its ilk. The only trouble is that the redline is a mere 200rpm above where peak power is produced, so just when it feels like the car is getting ballistically rapid, it shifts up a gear. Still, thats preferable to the manual car which just hits a very intrusive rev limiter. A small grumble in an otherwise very accomplished package.

Roll away from a standing start in the Gallardo and it gives little clue as to its potency. Youll have to get used to the goldfish-bowl nature of driving a car like this as onlookers peer in to see whos piloting it before registering a faint look of disappointment that it isnt a celeb they recognise. Youll gain their attention again the moment you prod the accelerator pedal. There is no appreciable ramping up in the noise level.

It just appears and the first time it happens youll physically recoil from the sound emanating from the back of the baby Lamborghini. Its an angry, feral noise that is a world away from the breathy timbre of a Porsche 911 or the screaming, almost musical crescendo of a Ferrari V8. In short, it sounds like a Lamborghini should. It goes like one too.

Against the clock, the Gallardo will register a sprint to 60mph in 3.8 seconds and keep going to 196mph. The four-wheel drive electronics arent quite as clever as those in a 911 Turbo when it comes to stepping cleanly off the line but get up to higher velocities and you wont begrudge that, the Gallardo behaving for the most part like a traditional rear driver. Only when youre really pushing it over scabby tarmac can you feel the front tyres biting for grip.

What impresses most is the body control. Drive the same section of road in a Porsche 911 or even a Ferrari F430 and there would be a lot more roll, squat and dive. The Lamborghini planes flat, almost sucked to the ground, its hefty 19-inch tyres and foursquare stance giving the driver almost unassailable confidence levels. Equipment levels have been enhanced and include items like the Lamborghini Multimedia System with CD changer, MP3 player and tuner.

A revised palette of interior and exterior colours is offered as are a whole range of options including a reversing camera and TV tuner. Other options include the popular Calisto wheels and a sports pack with racing steering wheel and suspension. The Gallardos shape still works wonderfully well. Although it shares many styling cues with its bigger brother, the Murcielago, the Gallardo is surprisingly small and slightly more aggressive with its chopped-off angles.

Luc Donkerwolke, the man responsible for penning both cars, has once again excelled himself. Obviously a Lamborghini, the Gallardos detailing does enough to distance it from the Murcielago. Park the two side by side and youll appreciate the differences but such is the success of the Gallardos lines that the latest Murcielago has adopted a sharper, Gallardo-looking front end. If one were to design the ultimate useable supercar, it would have Italian charisma and German build quality, the looks of a Lamborghini and the utility of a Porsche, but would go, stop and steer like nothing else.

The Gallardo is that car and, for the time being at least, is probably the finest all-round supercar money can buy.

Lotus unveiled the new Lotus 2-Eleven. Launched at the 77th annual Geneva International Motor Show, the Lotus 2-Eleven is aimed at the true track day enthusiast, taking Colin Chapman’s philosophy of ‘Performance Through Lightweight’ to its most extreme level yet.

Weighing in at just 670 kg (1,477 lbs) with 255 PS (252 bhp / 188 kw) on tap courtesy of its supercharged and intercooled 1796 cc engine, the Lotus 2-Eleven boasts a power to weight ratio similar to that of a 1960’s Formula One car. Designed with the most serious of track day enthusiasts in mind, the Lotus 2-Eleven offers race car levels of performance coupled with legendary Lotus Ride and Handling to deliver a truly outstanding track day car.

Said Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive Officer for Group Lotus plc: “The Lotus 2-Eleven takes our core brand values to the extreme. It is the ultimate track day vehicle - not only phenomenally quick, but also very user-friendly. Production of the Lotus 2-Eleven is scheduled to commence in April 2007 at the award winning and world-class Lotus manufacturing facility at Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, UK. The 2-Eleven build will be completed in dedicated Lotus Sport workshops and each vehicle will be given a Lotus Sport build plate.

The Lotus 2-Eleven is initially available in Launch Edition specification only, which boasts a dynamic and unique three-way Lotus Sport colour scheme complete with decal pack. The Launch Edition is available in two versions - Road Going Version (UK Single Vehicle Approval) fitted with front and rear lights, exhaust catalyst, single plane rear wing and other items to achieve compliance with UK road legal requirements and Track Only Version with an enhanced aerodynamics package including high downforce single plane carbon fibre rear wing, high downforce front splitter, brake lights and rear indicators and FIA approved driver’s race seat.

The recommended selling price (incl UK VAT) of the Lotus 2-Eleven Launch Edition will be £39,995. In the UK, the SVA version (Single Vehicle Type Approval) which includes delivery, Pre Delivery Inspection, first service, number plates, first registration fee, valet, 12 months’ Road Fund Licence, a full tank of fuel and SVA test costs an additional £1,100. The Lotus 2- Eleven is only available as a track-only option outside of the UK at 49,575 excluding local tax in mainland Europe. Pricing in Japan, South Africa and Lotus other international markets will be announced shortly.

Engine
The supercharged and intercooled 1796 cc engine in the Lotus 2-Eleven has a maximum power output of 255 PS (252 bhp / 188 kw) at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of approximately 242 Nm (179 lb/ft) at 7000 rpm. This significant amount of extra power and torque now available together with the VVTL-i variable cam system ensures that there is a smooth and linear surge of power from low engine speeds all the way to the maximum 8000 rpm. The Roots-type Eaton M62 supercharger (with a sealed-for-life internal mechanism meaning that it does not require the use of the engine’s oil) is run from the crankshaft and has an integral bypass valve for part load operation. Four high capacity injectors and an up rated fuel pump add additional fuel under hard acceleration or high speed driving.

An Accusump (engine oil accumulator unit) is included in the whole package as an oil reservoir back-up for extreme track use ensuring that, under those conditions, the engine oil pressure remains constant.

Twin oil coolers complete the powertrain package.

Transmission
A sports-type clutch plate and heavy duty clutch cover transfer the engine power and torque to the lightweight aluminium C64 six-speed gearbox (with an aluminium casing) – with the same perfectly spaced ratios as the Exige S. An open type differential is fitted as standard. The Lotus switchable Traction Control System (LTCS) works through the engine, reducing power to maintain traction; it is active above 8 km/h (5 mph) and reacts much more quickly than many brake-based systems.

Chassis & Integral Safety Features
The Lotus 2-Eleven uses a unique high-sided variant of the Lotus Elise lightweight chassis structure featuring epoxy bonded aluminium alloy extrusions with modified Exige S based running gear. This strong and stiff package features a comprehensive safety system with a glass fibre reinforced composite front crash structure allied to a high sill chassis for side impact protection. Additional chassis safety features include an FIA compliant 6-point rollover structure with integral harness mounts and lightweight galvanized steel rear sub frame incorporating a further crushable structure.

Body
The Lotus 2-Eleven features all new ultra-lightweight (40 kg / 88 lbs) composite bodywork featuring core-mat technology. All external panels are bolted on for ease of removal, maintenance and repair.

Wheels & Tyres
5-spoke lightweight forged black alloy wheels (front 7Jx16, rear 8J x 17) are shod with Lotus Sport specific Yokohama A048 R LTS tyres (front 195/50 R16, rear 225/45 R17), designed to maximise grip and achieve the exacting ride and handling targets set by Lotus.

Brakes
The brake system includes 288 mm cast iron cross drilled and ventilated discs, upgraded Pagid RS14 sports brake pads set into the brake calipers (aluminium alloy AP Racing 2-piston at the front and Brembo single sliding piston at the rear), high grade silicone brake fluid and stainless steel braided hoses. In addition, the proven Lotus track tuned servo-assisted fourchannel ABS system enhances braking performance and minimises stopping distance without taking over from the skill of the driver.

Suspension
Fully independent suspension utilising unequal length wishbones; Öhlins 2-way adjustable dampers with coil over springs and Lotus Sport adjustable front anti-roll bar. A rear double shear track control arm brace is provided to cope with the expected kerb abuse during heavy track day driving, with unique steering arms and front upper wishbones to suit ultra-low ride height.

It's a significant improvement in every way compared to the 575M Maranello it replaces, whose basic platform dates back a decade. Despite being larger in every dimension than the out-going 575M Maranello, the 599 GTB Fiorano is actually lighter. Though it may not be as ultimately manuverable as the smaller and lighter F430, the 599 GTB Fiorano is actually faster, more spacious inside and more comfortable on long trips.

The prancing horse had good reasons to be optimistic at the 2006 Geneva motor show (2-12 March), where it unveiled its new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the most powerful 12-cylinder berlinetta ever developed at Maranello.

With a total of 5,409 cars sold last year, Ferrari (2803 employees at end 2005) registered an increase of 8.7% over 2004 (2005 figures exclude Maserati as Fiat S.p.A. Group split the Ferrari Maserati Group in April 2005).

This figure reflects the strong performance of both the berlinetta and spider versions of the F430 and the 612 Scaglietti (834 of which were delivered) as well as a contribution from the limited edition Superamerica of which 559 were built in total. Almost every car ordered in 2005 included some personalisation features, selected either directly from the “Carrozzeria Scaglietti” Personalisation Programme or as one-off requests.

The front-mid engined Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano two-seater replaces the 575M Maranello berlinetta (sold in Europe for around 200,000 Euros), of which, together with the 550 Maranello introduced in 1996, some 5,700 units have been produced.

On the power side, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano boasts a 6-litre V12, which was derived from the engine that powered the Enzo supercar, developing 620 hp at 7,600 rpm.

With an Alcoa all-aluminium space frame chassis and bodywork, weight-power ratio remains under 2.6 kg/hp.

The new model is named Fiorano after the circuit Ferrari uses to test the performance of its track and road cars; the GTB comes as in Gran Turismo Berlinetta; and 599 for the 5999 cc of its V12 engine.

As a project, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano had several targets: to surpass the driving experience of renowned models such as the F40, to guarantee exceptional performance from innovative content and technology transfers from the F1 single-seaters... while delivering good standards of roominess, comfort, ergonomics and safety.

Nothing can express performance like figures. The new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 330 km/h.

Figures are expressed in the technical specification of the engine too: 5999 cm3 displacement getting a specific power output of 103 hp/litre, and that's without any direct or turbocharging. Such a figure is a first for a naturally aspirated production engine of this displacement.

The new model’s sportiness is due in part to record maximum revs for an engine of this displacement (apart from the Enzo). Its maximum power output is 620 hp at 7,600 rpm with a maximum engine speed of 8,400 rpm.

The Fiorano’s engine delivers a maximum torque of 608 Nm at 5,600 rpm, pulling the car well at almost any engine speed.





Very fast gear shifting, cutting overall gear-shift times to just 100 ms.


The twin overhead camshafts per cylinder bank come with continuously variable timing on both inlet and exhaust cams to optimise torque delivery and drivability at both low and high revs. Chain driven distribution reduces noise and is maintenance-free, while the twin-plate, low inertia clutch in unit with the engine helps lower the centre of gravity.

Fuel consumption remains the same as in the previous model, under similar use, despite the significant leap in performance (from 5748 cc V12, 515 hp and 589 Nm in the 575 M)

The new generation F1 gearbox that debuts on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is a further development of the one used on all of the models in the Ferrari range. The F1-SuperFast system enhances the car’s high-performance capabilities by using the elastic energy within the transmission components, together with the integrated electronic engine and gearbox management programmes, to speed up gear change times.

The various stages involved in changing the gears are implemented in parallel (non-sequentially) and this results in exceptionally fast gear shifting, cutting overall gear-shift times to just 100 ms. The system is integrated with the manettino (steering wheel-mounted manettino vehicle dynamics control switch, see opposite photo) and the driver is still free to choose between either the Automatic mode or the Launch Control setting which offers smoother starts from standstill.

The steering wheel-mounted manettino vehicle dynamics control switch, originally developed for the 1996 Formula One season, has been taken a step further for the new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. It now integrates the stability and F1-Trac traction control systems, the F1-SuperFast gearbox and the SCM (Magnetorheological Suspension Control) fluid suspension (see below).

This means that the driver can select the correct setting for the grip conditions at any given time. The manettino’s readouts are displayed on the new on-board Multi Display unit so that the information important to each specific setting is instantly available to the driver (e.g. lap times, tyre temperature and pressure or trip computer readouts.)

A world first for Ferrari, the F1-Trac system monitors the speed of both front and rear wheels and features predictive software that estimates the maximum available grip in advance, compares this information with the vehicle dynamics model stored in the control system, and adjusts its reactions to suit, optimising traction by modulating power delivery. It is integrated with the manettino which adapts the car’s behaviour to the driving conditions: the Sport setting provides the best balance between stability and performance on the road while Race ensures clients maximum performance combined with consistently brilliant handling.

Ferrari describes the result as an easier, smoother high-performance driving, thanks to maximum grip out of bends (a 20% increase in acceleration compared to a traditional traction and stability control system) and predictable handling even in extreme situations.

Then comes the SCM (Magnetorheological Suspension Control) suspension. Unlike traditional oleodynamic systems, magnetorheological (MR) fluid suspension systems (a Delphi system used as well by some of GM brands, including Cadillac and Chevrolet) react instantly to road conditions and driver inputs, as the dampers use a fluid the viscosity of which is modified by applying an electronically controlled magnetic field.





A new generation F1 gearbox debuts on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.


In practice, the SCM system improves body control, handling and road-holding thanks to optimal tyre grip in all road conditions, with a safer and more enjoyable driving experience courtesy of reduced roll and greater control when accelerating, braking and cornering.

This is the very first time the SCM (Magnetorheological Suspension Control) suspension has been used on a high performance sports car.





Lengthy testing in the wind tunnel at Ferrari plus various simulations added their contribution in terms of both downforce and drag. The optimisation of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano’s underbody, the rear diffuser and flying buttresses have resulted in an aerodynamic load of just 160 kg at 300 km/h. Similarly, the Cd – drag coefficient – is just 0.336.

Inside, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano cabin is trimmed in leather while the driver area and controls boast more high-tech detailing in carbon-fibre and aluminium.

In addition to the steering wheel and manettino, the central rev counter with a choice of red or yellow background and solid aluminium passenger controls, the new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano also boasts attractive new styling cues including a central grip to provide extra support for the passenger and new adaptive racing seats featuring carbon-fibre side rests.

Other standard accessories include front bi-xenon headlamps and rear light-emitting diodes (LED) lights, dusk and rain sensors, dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable steering-wheel column, hideaway radio/CD player and key with integrated volumetric anti-theft device and motion sensors.

Finally for some, or the starting point for others, the 599 GTB Fiorano also benefits from a vast choice of personalisation options available at Ferrari. Four areas are covered by this programme: Racing and Track, Exteriors and Colours, Interior and Materials, Equipment and Travel.

The Racing and Track options include CCM (Carbon Ceramic Material) brakes, 20” Challenge one-piece rims with run-flat tyres, four-point harnesses and a cockpit roll-bar. The Scuderia wheel arch shields and coloured brake callipers complete the look for sportier clients.

Interior and Materials options include a new Enzo Ferrari-inspired carbon-fibre steering wheel with LED rev display which can be specified along with a special carbon-fibre trim kit for the door panels, instrument panel, gear stick surround and sill kick panels. Various types of leather trim are also available for the seats and interior too. Travel and Equipment accessories include front and rear parking sensors, iPod-friendly set-up, satellite anti-theft system and a luggage set specially tailored to fit this model.
